ÉMILE LOUBET (1838–1929) EXCEPTIONAL COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS A collection relating to Émile Loubet, President of the Republic, comprising: Mr Loubet’s Bachelor of Laws degree dated 6 July 1859, signed by Mr Loubet in his capacity as Head of the Higher Education Division, no. 3768. A signed autograph letter from Émile Loubet to his wife on Chamber of Deputies letterhead, dated 28 May 1883. A handwritten and signed letter from Émile Loubet to his wife on Senate letterhead, dated 18 September 1895. A signed autograph letter from Émile Loubet to Mr Bonnal on Senate letterhead dated 21 July 1896, written whilst in Montélimar, in which he complains about the sub-prefect in office. ‘In Montélimar, the public is even more tiresome than in Paris; telephone de Sainxère to say that the situation here is untenable for me because of the ailing sub-prefect, who is launching incredible attacks against me. He must be replaced at the earliest opportunity, as I cannot tolerate this. ” This is believed to refer to the sub-prefect Simon Périer, who held office from 1891 to 1896. Speech by Émile Loubet at the funeral service for Philippe Le Royer (1816–1897), President of the Senate, who presided over the High Court and sentenced General Boulanger. Nine pages. An autograph postcard signed by Émile Loubet to the architect Jean Camoletti (1891–1972), sent from New York in 1915. A triptych postcard depicting the Woolworth Building. “See you very soon, my dear Jean. I am setting off, delighted with my trip. This postcard will give you an idea of the recent buildings. I shall bring you an album as well. I am leaving tomorrow for Savoie.” A signed autograph letter from Émile Loubet to Colonel Meaux Saint Marc, dated 14 August 1916, written at La Bégude de Mazenc. In it, Émile Loubet mentions the death of his brother Joseph-Auguste (1837–1916) as well as that of his son Philibert-Émile (1892–1916), who died at the front. ‘We are in great need of a little comfort from our friends. Following the death of our dear Émile, on 17 July I lost my beloved brother after a long illness’, ‘these are losses from which one can never find consolation. I hope that your three sons will emerge unscathed from this dreadful war and that our beloved homeland will bring about a lasting peace amongst the warring nations that sought to destroy us to satisfy their desires for conquest and oppression across the whole world. My son Paul is still in the Somme.” A summary card of a presidential hunt on 28 January 1904, at Marly, involving seven hunters. The card records 23 pheasants, 110 rabbits, 7 ducks and 7 ‘miscellaneous’ game. Among the shooters were ‘His Excellency the President, Generals Noyran, Faure-Biguet and Dubois’ and Colonel Meaux Saint Marc. Engraved by Stern, with Émile Loubet’s gilded monogram in the top right-hand corner. An undated autograph letter signed to the Prefect of the Drôme requesting intervention on behalf of a merchant from Grignan. A collection of postcards featuring Émile Loubet, including: the visit of His Majesty Alphonse XIII to Paris; Émile Loubet’s arrival in Algeria in 1903; and caricature postcards of Émile Loubet. Invitation card from the presidential couple to Mr Fromant, Secretary-General of the Chamber of Deputies’ Finance Committee, for an evening at the Élysée Palace ‘with dancing’, bearing the President of the Republic’s dry stamp. Invitation card for the ball hosted by the Union Compagnonnique.
