EXTREMELY RARE MORRIS COLUMN, PARIS The hexagonal cast-iron plinth, the sheet-metal shaft, and the zinc upper section comprising a dome fitted with six lunettes and a hexagonal canopy. A door provided access to the Parisian underground. The lunettes ensured ventilation of the underground space. Engraved in relief on the base: ‘Grados, builder and ornamentalist, 112 Boulevard Richard-Lenoir, Paris’ and ‘Morris and Sons, Printers, 64 Rue Amelot, Paris’. Second half of the 19th century. Height: approx. 600 cm. Attached spire. It was the printer Richard-Gabriel Morris who, in 1868, commissioned the construction of these famous advertising columns that bear his name. Over time, they have been replaced and modernised. It is therefore very rare to find original examples. To our knowledge, the only original example in an urban setting is located on Rue de Paris in Charenton and serves as a sign for the Théâtre des Deux Rives. As for our example, it was originally situated beneath the elevated metro line at Barbès-Rochechouart station, from where it was removed to make way for the installation of an escalator.
