19th-century French school, possibly Jules de TRISTAN (1776–1861) View of the chapel at the Château de l’Émerillon in Cléry-Saint-André (Loiret) Watercolour, unsigned 11.5 x 16.5 cm A very lively depiction of the surroundings of L’Émérillon Castle, featuring a peasant, his hair blowing in the wind, pushing his wheelbarrow along a narrow path in the foreground, and a carriage – perhaps belonging to the lord of the manor? – entering the main driveway in the background. No visible signature, but a later annotation on the reverse: ‘Chapelle de l’Émerillon, Jules de Tristan’. Jules Marie Claude, Marquis de Tristan, was born on 26 April 1776 in Orléans, where he died on 24 January 1861. His father, Nicolas Marie, Marquis de Tristan, was mayor of the town from 1789 to 1791. Jules was educated at the École des Mines and developed a wide-ranging knowledge of the arts, sciences and literature.
