The drawing depicts the original ‘Croix Rousse’, made of Couzon stone, prior to its demolition in 1881
It was reproduced, slightly reduced in size, on page 155 of ‘A Travers Lyon’ by Mr Josse [A. Bleton].
The term “Croix-Rousse” also appears in the early 16th century. It derives from the name of a cross made of yellow/red stone (Couzon stone, found at the foot of the Monts d’Or, is this colour). It is thought that this cross stood at the junction of two roads: one leading towards the Dombes (towards Bourg-en-Bresse), the other towards Neuville. It therefore stood on the site of the present-day crossroads formed by Rue Coste, Rue de Margnolles and Montée de la Boucle, which gave its name to the neighbourhood. Depicted as early as 1548, and again in 1625, in views of Lyon, it was toppled and re-erected several times (torn down by the Protestants in 1562, destroyed during the Revolution), the Croix Rousse disappeared in 1881 (removed by a decision of Lyon City Council), leaving its name to the hill between the Rhône and the Saône. Finally, in 1994, a replica was erected in Place Joannès Ambre.
