In addition to its undeniable artistic qualities and the vibrancy of its colour palette, this painting is of remarkable documentary interest, as it depicts Le Colombier, situated on Rue des Mercières in Rillieux-la-Pape – then in the department of Ain – a subject dear to the painter, located near the house he occupied; it is even said that he later bought this building.
Preserved in its original glass-fronted frame, our painting features a detail much loved by Brouillard: the canvas is unstretched, mounted directly onto the frame and held in place by a series of wooden struts
