Description
A rare piece of marbled velvet with a branch motif, from the Pernon workshop (?), c. 1780,
pattern-cut silk velvet on a cream ground, featuring a sinuous interlacing of roses and vine tendrils in shades of green and pink against a cream background, (irregularities), 78 x 50 cm.
Comparable to a ‘branche’ marbled velvet with a design similar to ‘vine foliage and garlands of roses’ commissioned from C. Pernon for Madame Victoire at Versailles, considered to be the only French royal commission for a marbled velvet in the 18th century; two others are recorded as having been commissioned for the Spanish Court and for Russia.
