Description
Set of embroidered orfrois, Venice (?), 15th–16th century,
a band and truncated back cross in raspberry-coloured taffeta lined with linen, with polychrome silk embroidery in split stitch and majolica stitch, and gold and silver filament thread in couching stitch. Decorated with figures of saints and Christ emerging from his tomb, set within architectural niches topped with domes and pinnacles. Lined with a fine mesh fabric (with gaps and signs of wear, partly restored), 113 x 16 cm and 80 x 44 cm.
