Description
Front of a chasuble, a lampas said to be made from fur originating from a fragment of Marie Leckzinska’s dress, Lyon, c. 1765,
pink ‘gros de Tours’ brocade woven with chenille yarn, spun and crimped, and silver and gold thread. Decorated with meandering fur motifs interlaced with spotted ermine and ribbon bows (some signs of wear), 110 x 52 cm.
Provenance: Tassinari & Chatel archives (Pon 6871). Handwritten label indicating this prestigious provenance. In the 18th century, many liturgical vestments were made from the fabrics of court robes donated to the clergy, as etiquette dictated that they should be worn only once.
A cope from the same set was sold at Drouot on 14 & 15 November 2006, Hamot estate, lot 540.
A fabric with a similar design is held at the Musée des Tissus in Lyon (inv. 2904).
