Large altar frontal, masterful embroidery, Italy, mid-18th century,
cream-coloured ‘gros de Tours’ fabric, embroidered with metallic filé and lame threads in guipure and couching, and with polychrome silk in a nuanced passé technique. Decorated with a rocaille cartouche featuring Saint Francis de Sales kneeling as he receives his mitre and crozier, carried by cherubs. Wide border featuring scrolls and floral interlacing punctuated by bouquets of roses and columbines rendered in needle-painting in subtle shades.
