Description
A rare panel of a chinoiserie in cutwork and needle embroidery, late 17th century, celadon-coloured marbled satin embroidered with appliquéd plain and textured silks, including cut velvet, shaped silk velvet and alluciolato silver thread, ‘gros de Tours’ and taffeta, and needlework in couching, Oriental stitch and overlapping backstitch to render the faces with particular care. Linen ground, traces of stencils on the satin, (a few imperfections), 128 x 54 cm. With no apparent coherence, the design combines two scenes featuring oversized flowers populated by butterflies and an exotic bird: in the upper section, a pontiff sits enthroned beneath a velvet canopy supported by figurative twisted columns; at his feet, a kneeling figure presents him with the Keys of Saint Peter (?) resting on a cushion. In the lower section, a richly dressed horseman is depicted. Related work: A second panel from the same set was sold at Drouot on 4 February 2011, Th. De Maigret lot 336.
