Jean JULIEN (1888–1974) Design for the Marseille Opera House: ‘Marseille glorifies opera’ Pencil drawing with gouache highlights on paper mounted on board 120 x 65 cm Inscribed at the bottom: ‘Marseille glorifies opera’ Signed lower right: Jean Julien In the entrance hall of the Opera House hangs the work entitled ‘Marseille glorifies opera’, a painting by Jean Julien, depicting numerous famous opera characters, including Lakmé, Sigurd, Brünnhilde, Figaro, Mignon, Orpheus, Mephistopheles, Don José, Carmen and Manon This painting is one of the many decorative works specially commissioned during the reconstruction of the Opera House following the fire of 1919. It reopened in 1924 in the ‘Art Deco’ style and became the largest performance venue of this architectural style in France.
