Description
Georges LE MARE (Coutances 1866 – Tunisia 1942)
Portrait of Gaston Troupel
Oil on canvas
105 x 130 cm
Inscribed and signed lower right: ‘To my friend G Troupel, with warm regards, G LE MARE’
Trained in Normandy, Georges Le Mare settled in Tunis at the turn of the 20th century, where he joined the community of European artists drawn to the light and landscapes of the Maghreb. A pupil of the French academic movements of the late 19th century, he developed a style imbued with realism and a sensitivity to colour. His compositions, often intimate in nature, reveal a keen eye for everyday life in Tunisia: interior scenes, portraits and views of studios, all bathed in warm, golden light.
This portrait, signed and dedicated to ‘G. Troupel’, exemplifies this intimate style. The recipient may be Gaston Troupel, a merchant based at 47 Rue d’Italie in Tunis (opposite the post office) around 1900, who supplied the armed forces and was a well-known figure within the French colonial community.
