Description
FRANCE. MEDAL OF THE 1860 CHINESE CAMPAIGN, in 800°/° silver with ribbon, designed by SACRISTAIN F., inscribed on the edge: ‘SLT BRAUT 12TH REG. CHASSEURS’. Second Empire period. Hallmarked with a crab. Diameter: 30 mm. Gross weight: 17 g. History: Born on 5 March 1830 in Paris, he enlisted as a chasseur in the 8th Regiment in August 1848 and was appointed a non-commissioned officer there in 1853 and awarded a military medal on 28 December 1859 whilst serving in Algeria. In January 1860, he was sent to China to join the General Staff of the expeditionary force. He was then promoted to second lieutenant in the 12th Chasseurs. Braux was mentioned in dispatches by the expeditionary force on 19 November 1860 for his bravery whilst escorting a Franco-British column to Beijing. He was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honour on 19 February 1861 and promoted to lieutenant on 29 May 1867. He was promoted to captain on 19 September 1870. He retired in 1875 and died on 15 April 1897.
