Description
USSR. Second-class USHAKOV MEDAL, first type, in 800°/°° silver, with ribbon. The reverse is numbered 77. Dimensions: 45 × 38 mm. Gross weight: 45.70 g. (The chain has been replaced). Provenance: according to the central archives of the Russian Ministry of Defence, this decoration was awarded by Decree No. 5 of 21 July 1944 to Ivan Egorovich Ageev, a first-class seaman/quartermaster in the 1st Torpedo Boat Brigade of the Baltic Fleet ‘Red Banner’ (digital copies of the extracts are available). ‘ During a combat operation aimed at defeating a detachment of enemy vessels on 4 July 1944, Comrade Ageev ensured the smooth operation of the engine, thereby contributing to the success of the attack and the sinking of a 700-tonne enemy minesweeper. The vessel had been hit head-on by a shell. Comrade Ageev quickly, skilfully and courageously repaired the breach in the hull and stopped water from flooding into the compartments, thereby enabling the damaged vessel to return to base.”
