Description
Sage: 25c. black on pink, with three letters addressed to the famous photographer Paul NADAR during his trip to TURKESTAN in 1890, all written by his parents, and a DRAVEIL postmark - SEINE-ET-OISE dated 27 August 1890, 2 and 17 September 1890. The first is addressed to CONSTANTINOPLE and then forwarded to TIFLIS by the French Embassy, with the TREBIZONDE postmark on the reverse - ASIAN TURKEY, dated 6 September 1890, with a Russian arrival stamp from TIFLIS. The second is addressed to BAKU, with a Russian arrival stamp dated 2 October on the reverse. The third is addressed to SAMARKAND with a Russian arrival postmark dated 18 October. The famous Parisian photographer left PARIS on the Orient Express, arriving in CONSTANTINOPLE on 18 August 1890. From the port of BATUM on the Black Sea, he travelled to BAKU in AZERBAIJAN, stopping off in TIFLIS. He crossed the Caspian Sea and travelled to SAMARKAND in UZBEKISTAN, then to TCHARDJOU in TURKMENISTAN. He brought back over 1,000 photographs from this journey. Very good. R. Yvert no. 97 O
