Description
Henri Manuel (1874-1947)
Mortigny costume party, probably around Le Diamant vert (a large-scale play in five acts and seven tableaux), c. 1910.

Medium format: 15 x 22 cm
The Cercle des Mortigny was founded in 1908 after the performance on 10 May at the home of Colonel d'Osnobischine of Le Secret des Morligny ou De l'Honneur à la Honte et vice versa, a burlesque drama imagined by Marcel Bain. It brought together Parisian artists, Russian royalty and Paul Poiret. The most celebrated and provocative couturier of the 1910s, Paul Poiret was also the organiser of legendary costume balls - including the famous "1002e nuit" in 1911.
Among the guests at this costume party were Roger Boutet de Monvel, Mary de Buck, Jean-Bernard Eschmann, the Count of Osnobichine, Paul Poiret, Bernard Boutet de Monvel, Jean-Louis Forain, Maxime Dethomas, Sylviac, Françoise Rosay's mother and Guy-Pierre Fauconnet.
