A close friend of Jean Cocteau, whom she photographed on several occasions, Germaine Krull captured him here in 1929, as he was coming out of rehab at the Saint-Cloud clinic, an experience he recounted the following year in Opium. In 1930, he wrote the preface to his Études de nu (Nude Studies) and addressed a now-famous letter to the photographer in which he hinted at the effect her work had on him: "You are a reforming mirror. You and the darkroom create a new world.
