An American transvestite trapeze artist and celebrated figure of the Parisian avant-garde, Barbette was the subject of an essay by Cocteau published in the Nouvelle Revue française in 1926, before appearing in Le Sang d'un poète. Sasha Masour's photograph shows him reclining on a sofa with an optical mechanism in the background, reminiscent of a Duchampian rotorelief - the sign "Danger de mort" (Danger of death) inscribed on the cushion alone condenses all the poetics of the film.
