The emblem of the Soviet modernisation programme, the Dniepr hydroelectric power station - the Dnieprostroi - was one of the most spectacular projects of the Stalinist era, involving tens of thousands of workers and American equipment supplied by General Electric. Designed by Viktor Vesnine and Nikolai Kolli, its construction (1927-1932) was extensively documented and published in Soviet and foreign illustrated magazines as a propaganda tool for industrial progress. Seriously damaged by Russian strikes in 2024, the plant has become one of the symbols of the destruction of Ukraine's industrial heritage.
