Description
[The Carrouges Affair] PASTOUREAU (Henri), French man of letters (1912–1996). Typewritten circular letter and typewritten text (aide-mémoire) concerning the case between Michel Carrouges and Henri Pastoureau in 1951. Paris, 28 February and 14 March 1951. 18 folio pages. On 28 February, Pastoureau circulated this mimeographed text, ‘Memorandum concerning the Carrouges Affair’, in which he expressed numerous grievances against André Breton, notably his lax attitude towards deviations from the fundamental principles of Surrealism. Supported by Péret, Breton replied on 16 March. In the typewritten circular letter, still signed by Henri Pastoureau, he stated that, as of 14 March, a general meeting authorised to resolve the dispute would be convened at the request of André Breton and Benjamin Perret, with details of the agenda and the list of those invited, including the doctor Adolphe Acker, the painter Maurice Baskine, Robert Lebel, Marcel Jean, Jacques and Vera Hérold, Jean-Louis Bédouin, Breton, Jean-Pierre Duprey, Julien Gracq, Peret, Schéhadé, the painter Toyen, Clovis Trouille, Isabelle and Patrick Walberg, to name but a few. However, as they were not in Paris, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Dorothéa Tanning, Mesens, Yves Tanguy and others were not invited… The situation escalated and, following this general meeting, Michel Carrouges was expelled from the group, as was Henri Pastoureau.
