Description
BORDEAUX (Henri), French lawyer, novelist and essayist (1870–1963). Signed autograph letter (2 pp., in-4) and signed autograph manuscript of 10 pp., folio. 16 August 1939. He sends his correspondent one of his articles, written in manuscript form, entitled ‘The Pilgrimage of Peace’, in which he explains how twenty thousand young workers were received by the Pope in Rome to hear a message of peace ‘Whilst the threats of war continue to poison the atmosphere in Europe and indeed throughout the world, a singular, a marvellous Pilgrimage of Peace is now setting out. Twenty thousand young workers, as the inscription at the start of the journey states, burning with a desire to find a solution to the anxieties of their working lives, have been sent by their factories, workshops, offices and housing estates; setting out from twenty different nations, they are setting off for Rome in search of the true echo of Christ’s words. Twenty thousand, half of whom are JOC members from France—young men and women! [...] On Sunday 3 September, these young workers will gather at St Peter’s to present the Supreme Pontiff with a bouquet of flowers. The big day will be Wednesday 6, when Pius XII will grant them an audience. There is no doubt that the Pope’s message of peace will be addressed not only to the JOC members, but to the whole world...’.
