Description
DESCAVES (Lucien), French writer (1861–1949). A set of three signed autograph manuscripts. All in quarto format. The first manuscript, entitled ‘A National Scourge’, deals with tuberculosis and alcoholism in France, as well as the French authorities’ failure to tackle these scourges. Descaves demonstrates the extent to which France fails to address these diseases by allowing hospitals to remain in appalling sanitary conditions. The second manuscript, 6 pp., in-4, entitled ‘Around Ariane’, concerns the institution known as ‘Ariane’, a reformatory for young children. This institution is accused of committing numerous abuses and atrocities against the children. Descaves transcribes an exchange between Minister Poussin de Vergettes and himself regarding this institution. The third manuscript, comprising 6 pp. in-4, entitled ‘Les gens de théâtre’, is an interesting study of theatre extras. Descaves takes us behind the scenes of the extras’ world – those who are paid and those who are not – exploring the hierarchy and the concerns of all the extras.
