Gilles CARON (1939–1970): Catholic demonstrations in Londonderry, 12 August 1969. Silver gelatin print, stamped ‘Gilles Caron’ on the reverse with some handwritten annotations, circa 1969, dimensions 20.2 x 30 cm. Tears on the lower right-hand edge of the print. Gilles Caron covered the Catholic demonstrations in Londonderry and Belfast in Northern Ireland. This photograph was taken two days before the deployment of the British government’s armed forces, which plunged the region into an escalation of civil war during the period known as ‘The Troubles’.
