Description
François Kollar (1904–1979). Bust of the novelist William Somerset Maugham by Jo Davidson. Large carbon print mounted on thick paper, with the photographer’s stamps on the reverse reading ‘Photo Kollar, 17 rue de la Tour Paris 16’, circa 1930, dimensions 28 x 22 cm. In perfect condition. In 1930, the American sculptor Jo Davidson asked François Kollar to take photographs of his sculptures. Davidson suggested that he set up shop directly in his own studio at 17, rue de la Tour in Paris, as Kollar, still at the start of his career, did not have a studio of his own. A remarkable early work by François Kollar, in which the talent of the great photographer that he was is clearly evident.
