Maurice DENIS (1870-1943) View of Conches, 1914 Oil on strong cardboard Signed, sited and dated lower left 37.5 x 49.8 cm Listed in the catalogue raisonné of the work of Maurice Denis under the direction of Claire Denis, under number 914.0049. The copy of the certificate of authenticity, dated 16 June 2017, from Madame Claire Denis will be given to the buyer. PROVENANCE : - Given by the artist to Madame Lauth (painter and sculptor, friend of the Denis family) for the Tombola des Alsaciens in 1916. - Boisseau Collection, by inheritance - Galerie Nord, Lille - Private collection, Paris NOTE : Maurice Denis enlisted in 1914 and was posted as a railway guard to Conches-en-Ouche (Normandy) in November and December 1914. Our painting is based on a preparatory sketch (CT47-49) depicting the town's main street, the town of Conches, with the church of Sainte-Foi on the right, half-timbered houses opposite, and the "Saint-Jacques", the former "prêvoté", on the left.
