Adrien-Etienne GAUDEZ (Lyon, 1845 – Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1902), Fortune Rewards Labour – A significant bronze group with a brown patina, titled, signed and marked ‘hors-concours’ (out of competition) in a scalloped cartouche on the front, countersigned ‘A Gaudez’ on the right-hand side – H. 76 cm; W. approx. 33 cm (wear and marks on the patina, in good overall condition)
BIOGRAPHY: “He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1862 and made his debut at the Salon two years later. In 1870, whilst a prisoner of war in Magdeburg, Germany, he sculpted the monument to French soldiers who died in captivity, which was erected in the town’s cemetery. He is also the creator of the Florian d’Alès, the Remiremont war memorial and *The Reaper* (a bronze statue intended for Parc Monceau). Few of his bronzes were exhibited at the Salon. Apart from *The Reaper* (1880), the only others worth mentioning are *Pro patria* (1884), *Les Premiers Imprimeurs* (1888), *Watteau* (1890), *Le Génie de l’Électricité* (1897) and *Le Faucheur* (1899). However, it appears that many of his works were cast in bronze, judging by the proofs mentioned in various books and catalogues, or dispersed at public auctions, notably in a sale organised, no doubt by the sculptor himself, on 3 October 1883.
