Jean-Baptiste-Marie FOUQUE (1819–1880), *La Charité*, oil on canvas, 1851, signed and dated in the lower right-hand corner and bearing the inscription ‘Donated to the Society of St Vincent de Paul’ within the architectural frame – approx. 60 x 49 cm (visible area) (losses to the paint layer and craquelure) COMMENT: Jean-Baptiste-Marie FOUQUE, also known as Jean-Marius FOUQUE, was born in Arles in 1819 and died in Lorient in 1880. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1846. He was trained chiefly under the guidance of M. de Lestang-Parade. Having travelled to the Far East, he won the favour of the King of Siam, Rama V, who appointed him his court painter. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1846 to 1879 and painted the portrait of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, now in the Louvre Museum in Paris. (Source: Bénézit)
