Pierre FONTAINE Military scenes, encampments, waterside village landscape, horse post, banquet scene, two friezes of Russian officers Fourteen drawings, pen and black and brown ink, grey and brown wash, watercolour. Approx. 8 x 14.7 cm, 9.5 x 18 cm and 13 x 18 cm One annotated and dated 1815. (Tears, accidents). Having found myself in the morning on Mount Aimé (a small isolated mound in the middle of the plains of Vertus), writing in my notebook, as a souvenir, the dispositions and manoeuvres that were being rehearsed by the army for the next day's review, the Emperor [Alexander I] (...) approached me and told me that he did not want to disturb me, (...) and that he would be happy to have a copy. Fontaine, Diary Fontaine explains that he did several small watercolour drawings of the review parade, the 300-cover banquet under the three tents and the Russians' mass at the foot of the vines.
