BRIZZI, Paul and Gaetan (born in 1951): The Tower of Babel Original wax-crayon illustration on paper. Signed ‘Brizzi’ in the bottom right-hand corner and dated [20]16 Trained in fine art and initially working as animators, the Brizzi brothers have also devoted themselves for the past twenty years or so to illustration and comic art, particularly for adaptations of major literary works (Dante, Poe, Balzac, etc.). This spectacular, very large-format work, with its commanding power, is largely the meticulous handiwork of Gaetan Brizzi, a specialist in set design. The extreme precision and attention to detail are achieved through the combination of tinted graphite and wax pencil, which produces a silky, velvety finish. The influence of Gustave Doré and Piranesi is evident. This piece is similar to another, smaller-scale version in grisaille, which was exhibited at the ‘Légendes’ exhibition at Daniel Maeghen from 16 March 2016 to 2 April 2016 Dimensions: 104 x 70.5 cm, beautifully framed.
