Description
CUVELIER, Paul (1923–1978): Epoxy
Original colour plate
Size 54 x 38.
Epoxy is a remarkable erotic comic book illustrated by Paul Cuvelier, creator of Corentin, and one of the four founders of the Journal de Tintin in 1946 alongside Hergé, E.P. Jacobs and Jacques Martin. The script, written by the prolific Jean Van Hamme (XIII, Largo Winch) – for whom this was his very first work – details the trials and tribulations of a young, naked Amazon, torn between pain and pleasure at the whim of the Greek gods.
The work was first published in large format by Eric Losfeld in May 1968.
Our page is probably one of only two in colour wash; the others are in black and white only.
The other page was sold in 2004 at M° Aguttes (Lot 80, expert Roland Buret).
According to Philippe Goddin, in his essential biography of Cuvelier published by Le Lombard in 1984 (‘Corentin et les chemins du merveilleux’), as Jean Van Hamme had reworked the first version of his script, the artist spent a great deal of time on test illustrations, using wash over pen-and-ink drawings, before deciding on the most suitable technique: “ This is how he was able to produce two superb sample pages for ‘Epoxy’, intended to pique the interest of publishers. Armed with these two pages and his script, Van Hamme travelled to Paris, where the publisher Éric Losfeld showed interest…’
The first panel of the second strip was reused to illustrate the cover of the album.
