Description
DRUILLET, Philippe (born 1944): [Dracula on his ship] Original ink and gouache illustration for the insert opposite page 94 of Bram Stoker’s *Dracula*, published by Opta in 1968. Signed lower right, size 54 x 35. Mounted in a passe-partout measuring 65 x 50, with a handwritten dedication: ‘To Jean Claude Romer, Friend of Dracula, Philippe Druillet’ (passe-partout created by Druillet, green paper with ink lines) Philippe Druillet produced just 8 Hors-Texte illustrations for this limited-edition volume, when he was only 24 years old. This one is undoubtedly the most successful, and demonstrates the young artist’s complete mastery of his craft. This exceptional illustration for *Dracula* is one of his earliest published works, following his debut book, *Le Mystère des abîmes*, published in 1966 by Losfeld. It was presented to the film critic Jean Claude Romer (1933–2021).
