Manuscript on civil law, Revolutionary period. In-4 manuscript, late 18th century to early 19th century (between 1798 and 1804), half-calf binding with ribbed spine, titled ‘Droit privé’ Handwritten ‘Bourdin’ bookplate on the flyleaf. 196–[36] pp., pp. 197–321. Book 1: On Persons, pp. 1–94 Book 2: On Property, pp. 95–178 Book 3: On Obligations, pp. 179–321 Between folio 196 and folio 197 is inserted a 36-page booklet, 22 of which are handwritten and the remainder blank, entitled “General principles drawn from the best sources”. These 101 principles are quotations from anonymous authors, both ancient (Grotius, Helvetius, Plato, Cicero, Solon, Aristotle, etc.), classical (Rousseau, Montesquieu, Mably, Locke, Condorcet, etc.) or contemporary authors (Bernardin de Saint Pierre, Carnot, etc.) With regard to family law and business law, this manuscript is an interesting account of the transitional state of French civil law just before the advent of the Civil Code, combining revolutionary laws (Law of 24 Vendémiaire, Year III; Law of 11 Brumaire, Year VII …), and texts from the Ancien Régime that had not yet been repealed (Ordinance of 1555; Law of 13 September 1791, …)
