Description
ROGERIUS: The Open Door: A Guide to Understanding Hidden Paganism (by Abraham ROGERIUS). Amsterdam: published by Jean Schipper (in Paris), 1670, in-4 (18x23.5cm), (16) 371pp. (5), notes and tables, with a beautiful engraved frontispiece title page, and a fold-out plate with 10 illustrations, plus 7 illustrations in the text, one of which is full-page. Contemporary full calf, ribbed spine decorated with fleurons, roulette on the edges, edges speckled with red. A rare and curious work concerning religious ceremonies and traditional spells from India. Its author, ‘a Protestant minister’, set sail for the East Indies in 1640 and spent nearly six years serving as a minister of the Gospel at the Dutch trading post at Palivent, on the Coromandel Coast. He took advantage of his stay in this then little-known region to learn about Hindu customs, and, having had the good fortune to befriend a few Brahmins, he obtained valuable information from them regarding their beliefs and worship ’ (Caillet, Bibliographical Handbook of Psychic or Occult Sciences, 9560).
This is the first known book on the Brahmins; indeed, the bulk of the work is devoted to them. Another section is dedicated to the ‘One Hundred Proverbs of the Pagan Barthrovherri’, a Sanskrit poet. The final chapter, entitled ‘Extract from *Illustrated China* by the Reverend Father A. Kirchere’, draws on the latter’s work, which is also devoted to the Brahmins. Upper and lower split molars
