BEGON] General Collection of Documents from the Trial of the Marquis de Gesvre and his wife, Mademoiselle de Mascranni, in Rotterdam, published by Reinier Leers, 1714, in-12 (9.5 × 16.5 cm), 2 volumes in one, [6]-28-352 pp.; [4]-376 p., in-16, full contemporary calfskin, spine decorated with raised bands, title labels, ornate fillets on the covers, lace lining. The most comprehensive collection of documents relating to a trial for the dissolution of a marriage on grounds of impotence, published by Etienne Bégon, the plaintiff’s lawyer. This trial caused quite a scandal in its day. Saint-Simon refers to it as follows in his memoirs: “well-known and even distinguished people would go to the hearings for entertainment: seats were reserved there from early in the morning”. The most intriguing documents contained in this collection are the reports from the various doctors and surgeons called as expert witnesses in the case, and the responses from the parties.
