An interesting account book inscribed on the cover as ‘Account book of the servants and labourers of La Romagere, 1799, St John’s Day’ Quarto-sized register bound in full vellum, with a lace fastening. 111 paginated pages, 40 blank pages (except for 3), 52 handwritten pages . Account entries dating from 1799 to 1820, relating to the Château de la Romagere in Saint-Sauvier, situated in the Allier (03370) . “Jeannneton’s account. Page 19. We hired Jeannneton on St John’s Day in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety-nine; we promised her thirty-six francs in wages and four livres of pins; she received the four livres of pins. Re-hired Jeannneton on St John’s Day 180 for the same wage; she received the four livres of pins... " … " In 1812, I fished the Romagère pond, which had been restocked with fish in 1809 after otters had wreaked havoc. I found only one hundred and fifty livres of carp …" A fine, fairly legible account of life on a rural estate in the Allier in the early 19th century.
