Description
DARSIGNY, F. [MACHART, E.F.A.]: *Descarnado* or *Paris à vol de diable*. Delaunay, 1837, 2 volumes, in-8, paperback, 304 and 342 pp. Water stains in the margins of Volume I. First edition, complete in two volumes, of this novel published under a pseudonym by E. F. A. Machart, a barrister at the Court of Amiens, and written as a sequel to Alain-René Lesage’s *Le Diable boiteux* (1707), featuring a pair of characters from Madrid. Unlike that novel, which presented a series of independent stories, *Paris à vol de diable* is a study of Parisian manners, set ten years before *Le Diable à Paris*. Our two Spaniards, hailing from an ancient civilisation, discover Paris with wide-eyed wonder. The author plays with anachronisms and names, and lists the innovations that have arrived in the city over the past century. Lacombe 711 Very rare
