JAQUES: *The Inevitable Death and the Useless Excuses Offered for This Necessity*, by Mre Jaques Jaques, canon of the Metropolitan Church of Ambrun, supplemented by *The Newly-Married Lawyer* and *Reflections on Eternity*, all in burlesque verse Lyon, Pierre Thened, 1707; 12mo, [10]–489 pp. and a copper-engraved frontispiece depicting a pope, a cardinal and a bishop, surrounded by two skeletons, one of whom is wearing a cardinal’s hat. Contemporary full calf binding, ribbed spine, title label in ornately decorated maroquin. “A curious 17th-century poem on death and humanity’s desperate attempts to persuade the Grim Reaper to spare them for just a moment longer. This satirical sketch in burlesque verse features dialogues between various social archetypes and Death, in the style of the danse macabre” (Anne Lamort) Contemporary full calfskin binding, ribbed spine, title label in ornate compartmentalised morocco.
