HORACE: Horati Flacci Emblemata. With engravings on copper and annotated by Otto Van Veen. Published by Ex officina Hieronymi Verdussen, 1607, in quarto, 214 pp. Emblems after Horace, edited by Otto Van Veen (Vaeniuq), a master in Antwerp in 1593, painter at the court of Albert and Isabella. Master of Rubens. Over 100 drawings, based on a quotation from the poet Horace and commented upon with extracts from ancient authors, are illustrated by 102 full-page engravings, no doubt engraved from Van Veen’s drawings by his brother Gysbert, This edition, dedicated to Archduke Albert, contains the first proofs of the engravings; the binding is a later addition. The volume is incomplete.
