CARTIER PRISM MYSTERY LAPIS DESK CLOCK, SWITZERLAND CIRCA 1980
This mystery clock by Cartier, known as the 'prism' clock, is a work of exceptional engineering and fine art. Made in an elegant Art Deco style with lapis lazuli plaques, this prism clock features prisms and quartz crystal mirrors that allow the dial, which is hidden in the base, to become visible through the transparent window, but only from a certain angle. This ingenious design was first developed and patented in 1937 by Gaston Cusin, who was inspired by a periscope. Cartier has produced several prism watch models, many of them made from fine materials and elegant designs like this one.
