Made less than two years after moving to New York, the Family Tree series marks a turning point in Zhang Huan's practice. The artist uses his own face as a support, inscribed with words, names and stories linked to his cultural heritage. In nine successive photographs, Zhang's face is gradually covered in ink until it is completely blackened. Inspired by Chinese physiognomy, the ancient art of reading character and destiny from facial features. The work questions the way in which tradition and culture shape, and even mask, individual identity. Powerful and introspective, Family Tree powerfully illustrates the tension between memory, belonging and self-effacement.
