Description
ZHANG HUAN (Born 1965) Family Tree, 2001 Series of 9 c-prints, each signed, numbered 17/25 and located NY on the back 53 x 41 cm each - 20 7/8 × 16 1/8 in. (each) Nine chromogenic prints, each signed, numbered 17/25 and located NY on the reverse PROVENANCE Galerie Albert Benamou, Paris Acquired from the latter by the current owner in 2003 Made less than two years after moving to New York, the Family Tree series marks a turning point in Zhang Huan's practice. The artist uses his own face as a support, inscribed with words, names and stories linked to his cultural heritage. In nine successive photographs, Zhang's face is gradually covered in ink until it is completely blackened. Inspired by Chinese physiognomy, the ancient art of reading character and destiny from facial features. The work questions the way in which tradition and culture shape, and even mask, individual identity. Powerful and introspective, Family Tree powerfully illustrates the tension between memory, belonging and self-effacement.
