Description
Yves KLEIN (1928-1962) IKB stamp and invitations, 1957-1958 IKB pigment on an uncancelled stamp, on a letter containing a personal invitation to the exhibition "La spécialisation de la sensibilité à l'état de matière première en sensibilité picturale stabilisée" (dite "Le Vide"), from 28 April to 5 May, Galerie Iris Clert, Paris; enclosed, the invitation card to the opening of the exhibition by Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely at the Galerie Iris Clert, 17 November 1958, IKB pigment and printing on cardboard disk The IKB stamp: 2.5 x 2 cm The invitation card: diameter 9 cm [...] Iris Clert and I composed the invitation card for the vernissage, the text of which was written by Pierre Restany. This brilliantly laconic text is very clear and we decided, given the importance of this exhibition for the history of art, to print it on a card in an informal format but 'in English' for the solemnity and, above all, in relief so that blind people could read it (they are all blind!), without any pejorative or aggressive intention. The ink used will obviously be blue, printed on white card. This apparently symbolist method is not in reality, since in fact everything takes place in space. This is to give a foretaste of what the Exhibition will be: in fact, a space of blue sensibility within the white walls of the gallery. (The blood of the body of sensibility is blue). It was also decided to send out invitations in envelopes stamped with the dreaded Blue stamp from last year's Blue Period. "Iris Clert invites you to honour, with all your emotional presence, the lucid and positive advent of a certain reign of the sensitive. This event of perceptive synthesis is the culmination of Yves Klein's pictorial quest for an ecstatic and immediately communicable emotion. (vernissage, 3, rue des Beaux-Arts, Monday 28 April, 9pm to midnight). Pierre Restany 3,500 invitations were sent out, 3,000 of them to Paris itself. We also decided to add a kind of free entry voucher, making it clear that without this special little card the price of entry would be 1,500 francs per person. This manoeuvre is necessary because, although the entire pictorial sensibility that I am exhibiting is for sale in shreds or as a single block, visitors with their own body or vehicle of sensibility will be able, in spite of myself, although I will hold back the whole of the Exhibition with all my might, to steal from it by impregnation, consciously or unconsciously, some degree of intensity. And that, above all, has to be paid for. It's really not expensive, after all, 1,500 francs.
