Description
Jean-Paul VAN LITH (b. 1940)
Polychrome glass sculpture, signed on the piece and dated 97. One-off piece. Chips noted. 20th-century piece. Dimensions: H: 34; W: 30; D: 13 cm. Jean-Paul VAN LITH trained at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, in the ceramics department, which soon led him to work with glass. In Biot, where his studio is based, he collaborated, from 1979 to 1981, with Jean-Claude Novaro to produce some six hundred pieces decorated with metallic lustres and gold, using a technique he had previously applied to ceramics. In 1982, he began a collaboration with a crystal manufacturer (Waltersperger) in Blangy-sur-Bresle, in northern France. Jean-Paul Van Lith produced his first crystal pieces with the help of a Venetian glassmaker. The crystal glassworks in Portieux (in the Vosges) hired him that same year1982, to set up a glass art studio there (which remained in operation until 1984). Monica Damian and Matei Negreanu joined him there. In 1984–1985, he was appointed as a designer and instructor at the Hartswiller crystal factory near Strasbourg (founded in 1932). His works have beenin numerous solo exhibitions, mainly in France but also in Luxembourg, Portugal, the USA, Hong Kong and Korea. In Seattle (USA), he exhibited alongside the American glass artist Dale Chihuly.
