Description
Josef Maria Olbrich (1867–1908) for Thonet Art Nouveau sofa in natural, weathered solid beech, with rounded shapes. Upholstered seat and backrest. Stamped: Thonet on the underside (founded in 1819) Circa 1900. Dimensions: H: 87; W: 142; D: 52 cm Founded in 1819, Thonet is the world’s oldest furniture manufacturer. That same year, the carpenter Michael Thonet (1796–1871) opened a furniture workshop in Boppard, Germany. A fervent advocate of the Biedermeier style, he specialised in chairs, tables and storage units characterised by clean lines and minimal ornamentation, with an emphasis on functionalist principles. In the 1830s, Thonet’s steam-bent wooden furniture, such as his famous Boppard Chair (1836), brought him international success. His designs were lightweight, durable and comfortable – a combination that was still unknown in Europe at the time.
