Pierre-Philippe Thomire was the leading Parisian bronze artist of the last quarter of the 18th century and the early decades of the following century. In his early career, he worked for Pierre Gouthière, the king’s chaser and founder, before collaborating with Louis Prieur from the mid-1770s onwards. He subsequently became one of the official bronze-casters for the Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Sèvres, working on the bronze decoration for most of the major creations of the time. After the Revolution, he bought the business of Martin-Eloi Lignereux and became the leading supplier of decorative bronzes for castles and imperial palaces. At the same time, he worked for a wealthy clientele of French and foreign private individuals, including, notably, several of Napoleon’s marshals. He finally retired from business in 1823.
