Description
Jean-Baptiste LELARGE III (1743–1802) Master craftsman from 1 February 1775 Louis XVI ‘Queen’s’ armchair, in moulded, carved and gilded beech. Medallion-shaped backrest, rounded waistband and flared, fluted and scrolled armrests, finished with an acanthus leaf. Resting on tapered, fluted legs. Stamped ‘J.B. Lelarge’, who was granted his master’s certificate on 1 February 1775. Beautifully upholstered in Aubusson tapestry featuring medallions set within floral garlands. In typical 18th-century condition. Dimensions: H: 97.5; W: 64; D: 49 cm Jean-Baptiste Lelarge, the third of that name, completed his apprenticeship on Rue de Cléry in the workshop of his father, Jean-Baptiste II, and succeeded him after receiving his master’s certificate. He quickly gained a fine reputation. Although the archives of the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne make no mention of his name, he produced a great deal of work for a wealthy clientele, both French and foreign, including the King of Portugal. His business survived the Revolution, and he resumed some activity until his death. It is possible that, early in his career, he produced Louis XV chairs, but the fact that he used the same mark as his father means this cannot be confirmed. This is why only Louis XVI-style pieces are usually attributed to him.
