Charles Chevalier" drawer camera, Paris, circa 1845-50. As is. N.B. Jean-Marie PRADES: Chambre à tiroir : Charles Chevalier in Paris. Circa 1845-50. Full plate format: 16.5 x 21.5 cm. Lens Charles Chevalier : Combined glass photographer, 158 Palais Royal. - Vincent and Charles Chevalier were among the first opticians to design, manufacture and sell photographic equipment (...) In 1821, Charles joined his father's business as an apprentice. In 1823, they perfected the meniscus prism (camera obscura lens) and specialised in the manufacture of achromatic microscope lenses. (...) In 1824, the shop took on the new name: 'Au microscope achromatique'? It was here that the destiny of photography was sealed. Daguerre and Nièce were both customers of the shop, where they learned about Nièce's work. In 1832, Charles Chevalier separated from his father and opened his own shop in the Palais Royal, 163 galerie de Valois. He continued his work on the microscope, the telescope and the terrestrial telescope, for which he developed a combined lens and patented it in 1834. Photography was born in 1840, and early that year he presented his famous lens: 'Le photographe à verres combinés' (...).
