Description
American travel photographic laboratory, Jonte and Domenach, for use of the Humid Collodion in the open air, tripod, circa 1865-1870. As is. N.B. Jean-Marie PRADES: American Laboratory. Circa 1865-1870. Jonte and Domenech field laboratory, for outdoor use of wet collodion. 13 x 18 cm travel camera. Darlot lens. - This laboratory, made by Jonte and designed by Domenech, was intended for outdoor use of wet collodion. It consists of a box containing the darkroom and all the products, cuvettes, tweezers, flasks and other accessories needed for wet collodion photography. When the box is opened, the side flaps fold out, forming a veritable cabinet where the various utensils are within easy reach. The box is fitted with straps so that it can be carried on the back and, to make it as light as possible, the sides are made of 'ebonite'. All the operator has to do is fix this cloth under the laboratory, slide it over the laboratory and a steel wire arranged in an arc of a circle, pull it over his head and finally fix it around his waist using two small strings provided for this purpose. The photographer was thus enclosed in a perfectly light-tight cabinet (...) It was on 7 May 1869 that Mr Domenach, an American engineer, presented his laboratory to the Société française de photographie.
