Eugène CICERI (1813–1890) Le Pollet in Dieppe Oil on canvas (historical restorations) Signed lower right: “Eug Cicéri” Inscription on the stretcher: “Le Pollet in Dieppe” and “Salon 1887” 62 x 89 cm Exhibition Salon of 1887, no. 540 “A Corner of Le Pollet” Eugène was a pupil of Pierre Luc Charles Cicéri (1782–1868), set designer at the Paris Opera and official set designer under the July Monarchy. He was also the nephew of the painter Eugène Isabey (1804–1886). As well as designing theatre sets and being a keen traveller, Eugène Cicéri is best known as a landscape artist. He was one of the most remarkable draughtsmen and lithographers in Baron Taylor’s team and contributed to the illustrations for the famous *Picturesque and Romantic Journeys through Ancient France*, including a volume devoted to Normandy (*Ancienne Normandie*, third and final volume, Firmin-Didot, 1878). This work took him all over the region, where he produced numerous drawings and wash sketches, which he reproduced in his lithographs but also used as the basis for his painted compositions. Our painting, exhibited at the 1887 Salon, depicts a view of Rue du Petit Fort as it slopes down towards Rue Guerrier. This is one of the iconic streets of the Pollet district, which was also chosen to feature on postcards produced after the painting was completed. The picturesque charm of this corner of Le Pollet, as captured by the painter, has now been lost due to the demolition of the house with the reddish-brown rendered wall, on which the artist brilliantly rendered the play of light and shadow on a sunny day in Dieppe.
