Joseph Rivière was a French figurative sculptor, born in Tours in 1912 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux under Charles Malric and François-Maurice Roganeau. His work focused primarily on the human figure, nudes and portraits, executed in a restrained yet expressive style that drew on the tradition of 20th-century French figurative sculpture.
Active first in Bordeaux and then in Paris, he exhibited regularly at art salons and taught, notably, at the Académie Julian. His body of work also includes several monumental commissions and commemorative monuments. The Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris holds several of his bronze sculptures, including *Baigneuse* (c. 1950), *Prière* (c. 1955) and *Arica* (1959), which demonstrate the importance he attached to the figure and modelling in his work.
