Jean Cluseau-Lanauve was a French painter, draughtsman, engraver and lithographer, associated with the École de Paris. Born in Périgueux in 1914, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and developed a body of work largely inspired by the landscapes of the Périgord, seascapes and scenes of everyday life.
His painting, characterised by a restrained composition, simplified forms and a particular focus on light and colour, evolved after the war towards a style with Cubist influences. A lecturer at the École Estienne from 1951 to 1976 and an Official Painter to the Navy, he was awarded, amongst other honours, the Venice Prize in 1948 and the Puvis-de-Chavannes Prize in 1993.
